Apply some thinset to the gap. Seal narrow cracks with paintable or clear latex caulk either at the top or along the bottom where the baseboards meet the floor. It is the material that you use underneath the backer board to attach it to the wood subfloor. Push the mortar through the mesh tape and into the 1 8 inch space between the backer board and the drywall.
